Tips for Preventing AC Repairs

The best way to handle air conditioning repairs is to prevent them from being an issue altogether. You can do this with some simple tips for using your air conditioner smartly to reduce unnecessary wear and tear.

When something happens and you do need air conditioning repair in Ontario, give our team a call and we will be there to help. You can keep reading to learn our usage tips for maximizing your air conditioner operation and helping to reduce the chances of unexpected repair needs.

Thermostat Settings

One of the easiest ways to prevent unexpected AC repairs is by using wise settings for cooling during the summertime. If you set your thermostat too low, your air conditioner will struggle against trying to achieve cooling results that simply are not possible.

Realistically, your air conditioner can only lower the indoor air temperature to about 20° lower than the outdoor air temperature. Since we have milder summers, we don’t have to worry about this quite as much but it’s still something you want to keep in mind.

It’s a good idea to be cognizant of what settings you are using on your thermostat. Ideally, you don’t want to set your thermostat lower than 78° for cooling. On particularly comfortable days, you may even turn your air conditioner off completely to give it a break from operating around the clock.

These steps can go a long way toward reducing the strain on your air conditioner so that it can last longer and face fewer repair needs over the years. You can consider this preventative action to take care of your AC and lessen the chances of major issues.

Consistent Care

Taking care of your air conditioner is another way to prevent problems that lead to an effective operation. Steps like rinsing out the condensate drain line with vinegar and changing out the air filter on time will go a long way toward keeping your air conditioner healthy month after month and year after year.

You can also keep an eye on your outdoor unit to make sure it doesn’t get too dirty. If it does, rinsing it off with your water hose set to a gentle pressure will help to keep those delicate fins clean and maximize airflow leading outside.

After all, the outdoor unit is where your air conditioner pushes the heat that it absorbs from inside your home. If the outdoor unit gets too dirty, that heat could easily get trapped inside, releasing back into the air and resulting in higher indoor air temperatures.

The Professional Difference

You also want to make sure that an HVAC expert takes a look at your air conditioner at least once a year. Even if there are no obvious problems happening, we can often catch issues before they get too bad. Making tweaks all along and replacing components before they wear out will help your air conditioner to keep operating well and face fewer unexpected breakdowns or repair needs over the years.
