How Do Central Air Units Work?
So what makes the central air conditioner such a powerful and convenient home cooling system? The fact that, when properly sized and expertly installed, they can cool an entire house down while using just one centralized indoor unit, and one outdoor unit. Each of these units houses a specific type of coil: the evaporator coil, located indoors, and the condenser coil, which is in the outdoor unit that also houses the compressor. Refrigerant cycles back and forth between these units.
It acts as a heat transfer fluid, and changes easily between states. Refrigerant evaporates in the indoor evaporator coil, which allows it to draw heat out of the air passing over that coil. The cooled air is then distributed throughout the house via a system of ducts. The refrigerant then travels outdoors, shedding its heat as it is condensed in the condenser coil. The process is repeated until temperatures throughout your home reach the desired level.
Benefits of Split Air Conditioners
The central air conditioner may work according to the same basic principles as window units, but using one is an overall and undeniable improvement over these systems. Consider the following benefits of going the whole–house route with your air conditioning system.
- Improved comfort. With a centralized duct delivery system reaching all corners of your home, you won’t run into the hot spots that you likely would when using multiple window units throughout your home.
- Increased security. When you leave your windows unlocked and essentially open in order to allow for the installation of a window unit, you are basically inviting trouble. Don’t leave your home unsecured, especially on ground levels.
- Less noise. Window units are noisy. They rattle, they buzz, and they vibrate up against the window frame. Plus, they can let noise from outdoors in. When you use a central system, you may hear it cycle on and off, or air blowing from the vents, but it is a much quieter scenario.
