Get Your Air Conditioner Ready for Spring

air-conditioning-springWinter doesn’t really hit us here in the Inland Empire: not the way it does back east, certainly. But the weather is cooler and pleasant, which means we rarely have the need for our air conditioners during this part of the year. That makes now an excellent time to get your system ready for the spring. Warm weather arrives sooner every year, it seems, and if your air conditioner is ready to go, you can be assured that it will run efficiently all summer long.

Certain steps you can take yourself. For example, you can replace the system’s filter with a new one (replacements are available at any hardware store or home improvement center). You might also take some little steps to help make your home more energy efficient, such as sealing cracks under doors and windows with weather stripping (also available at any hardware store).

But the best thing you can do for your air conditioner at this particular time of the year is to schedule a maintenance session with a qualified AC technician. The benefits are considerable, and when applied regularly over time, can do wonders for your system. In a town as hot as ours for as many months of the year as we experience, it just makes sense.

What Is It?

Maintenance is a tune-up for your system: a chance for the technician to look it over and check for any and all issues that may be lingering. Sometimes, the issues are small: things like loose bolts and clogged filters that don’t cause much trouble now, but which can lead to bigger problems in the future. In those cases, the technician can fix them as part of the maintenance session. If the issue is bigger than that – requiring a separate and more formal repair session – then the technician can spot the issue and set up such a session at your convenience.

What are the Advantages?

The advantages of a maintenance session are as follows:

  • Lower Bills. Correcting all of those little issues means that the system will be able to do its job more effectively. That means it won’t cost as much to run over the summer as it might without the maintenance session. It also means that breakdowns and repairs are less likely, since individual components won’t be under as much strain.
  • More Manageable Repairs. If repairs are necessary, it’s far better to find that out now – when you have months to plan a session – than in the middle of a summer heat wave when you really need your system to perform. In many cases, the repairs will be cheaper as well, since the damage won’t have as much time to spread.
  • A Longer Lifespan. When applied on a regular basis – say, once a year or so – maintenance sessions can reduce the wear and tear on your system. That, in turn, will help it last longer and make repairs less expensive later in the system’s life.
