What Type of Heater Is the Most Efficient?

When it comes to investing in a new heating system for your home, you want to make the right decision now since it is one you will live with for the next 10 to 25 years. Effective heating and energy efficiency are probably top of mind as you are selecting a system.

When it comes down to gas versus electric heating, you may be wondering which one is the better choice. They each offer unique pros and cons, but one does offer better overall energy efficiency. Keep reading to learn more about energy efficiency in whole-house heating systems and then give our team a call to schedule your heater installation in Irvine.

Pros and Cons of a Gas Heater

Gas heaters are very popular for a few key reasons. Gas heaters produce high temperatures very quickly, creating efficient and effective heat in a short period of time.

Natural gas is also a clean burning energy source, making it a good choice if you are concerned about your impact on the environment. Gas furnaces also have the potential to be used even when the power is out. Keep in mind that many gas furnaces still require electricity, but there are some models that you can operate even when the power is out.

Downsides to consider before investing in a gas furnace include the upfront cost for installation. Gas furnaces tend to cost more since they are more complex systems compared to electric furnaces. The heat exchanger on a gas furnace has to be completely airtight so that carbon monoxide gas does not leak out into the clean air that you breathe.

Maintenance is also slightly more expensive because there are usually more steps that our team has to complete to care for a gas furnace. The good news is that the costs can even out when you consider that you are saving money on your monthly energy bills.

Pros and Cons of an Electric Heater

Electric heaters have essentially the opposite pros and cons of a gas furnace. Electric furnaces are cheaper for installation, but cost more to operate on a monthly basis. This is because it takes longer for a heating element to produce heat compared to the open flame of a gas furnace.

Electric furnaces can also take longer to heat up your home. Of course, once the desired indoor air temperature is reached, an electric furnace will do a great job of maintaining the temperature consistently around the clock.

Another benefit is that an electric furnace does not require as much maintenance. You still need to schedule your annual service appointment, but we probably won’t need to complete quite as many steps as we would for a gas furnace. Fewer potential problems can also save you money on occasional repair needs.

Selecting a Heater

Each of these different heating systems has different benefits. It really comes down to your preferences and the expectations you have for heating your home. If you already have gas service established, it may make sense to invest in a gas heater. Just be sure that you also have carbon monoxide detectors in place if you have gas service in any capacity.

You do not have the availability of gas service, an electric heater makes more sense. As you get closer to making a decision and if you have any further questions about these two types of systems, just give our team a call. We would be happy to review your options in greater detail.
