Bad Heater Airflow Can Lead to These Problems

HVAC-maintenance-sessions

Does your heater have bad airflow? If so, it’s not just an inconvenience, it can actually be a huge problem for your heater. Bad heat or airflow can actually cause other problems inside your heating system and around your home.

Don’t ignore the signs of poor airflow in your heater. Instead, schedule heater repair and get ahead of the problem. When you invest in heater maintenance, the repair bill often costs less and can help keep your heater running great for years to come. Ignoring the problem will only make it worse.

Signs of Poor Airflow

First, do you want to understand what constitutes poor airflow, so you know what to watch for? The sooner you can identify and fix a heater problem, the better. Signs of poor airflow in a heater include:

  • You are home having some rooms that are significantly hotter or colder than others
  • Not feeling a strong stream of air coming from the vents
  • Not feeling air in a single room or area
  • Feeling air that is cool or lukewarm
  • An unusual sound like whistling
  • Knocking and slamming sounds

Repercussions of Bad Heater Airflow

Dirty Condenser Coils

Your heater may have a set of coils on the inside and a set of coils on the outside, depending on what type of heater you have. The outside coils are called condenser coils. Bad airflow can cause these coils to get dirty faster as your system struggles. Even worse, dirty condenser coils can make your airflow problem even worse. You should schedule HVAC maintenance and have these coils cleaned at least once a year, whether you have airflow problems or not.

Ductwork Holes

Bad airflow puts a strain on your HVAC system, and can in turn increase the pressure inside your air ducts. While these holes may release some of the pressure from the poor airflow, it is definitely not a solution. When this happens, it can break the seals and allow dust and dirt into the air you breathe. It can also allow your heated air to escape without ever making it into your home.

Overheating

If you have bad airflow coming into your system, your system may work harder to bring more air in to heat your home. The most common cause of this is a dirty air filter. Make sure that you change your air filter every single month on time. Otherwise, you were system may work so hard that the motor overheats.

But airflow problems can also occur with the air that is supposed to blow into your home. If ducts or vents are blocked, heated air gets trapped inside your heating system, which can lead to the inside getting too hot. It can damage your system or lead to it aging prematurely so you have to replace the entire system sooner. After all, some damage is so great that it cannot be repaired.
